WHAT PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE/S DO THE WORKSHOPS COVER?
We teach GML (GameMaker Language) in the game engine GameMaker!GML is incredibly versatile, and serves as an excellent entry point to other widely-used programming languages such as Python and Java Script.
CAN MY CHILD BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOP?
Absolutely! We only ask that GameMaker is installed on the device beforehand (this
is the game engine we will be using to create our games).GameMaker is available for download here. It's a very lightweight program, which means it should run on almost any computer. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux Ubuntu, and the best part — it's 100% free, no sign-ups required!
WHAT IS 'GAME MAKER'?
GameMaker is a special kind of program called a game engine — this is the environment used to create a game. Just like there are many different text editors to
choose from (e.g. Microsoft Word, Google Docs) if you’d like to write a book, there are many different game engines in which you can make a game! We’ve chosen to use GameMaker for the following reasons:
It’s lightweight
Because it does not require many resources, GameMaker can run on almost any computer, even older devices.
It’s free to use, and does not require sign-ups
It’s easy (and fun!) to learn
It’s powerful
GameMaker may be small, but it's mighty! Here are some examples of some games people have created using GameMaker — you may recognise some!
A supportive community
There are tons of (free!) resources available online in case you or your child would like to continue making games outside of our workshop!
HOW DO I KNOW WHICH CLASS (BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE) IS APPROPRIATE FOR
MY CHILD?
Our BEGINNER SESSION is suited to beginners and absolute beginners alike — we welcome and encourage anyone with a curiosity in games to join, whether they're an avid gamer or they've never touched a mouse before! Here we will start from the ground-up, teaching basic coding and game design principles such as movement, collision and debugging. Our INTERMEDIATE SESSION is suited to kids who are more confident coding in
GameMaker, recommended for kids who have previously attended at least 2 Gameventure workshops. We will speed through the basics and focus on more advanced concepts such as applying gravity, animation, polish, and different control schemes. If you're still unsure which class is best suited, we recommend the BEGINNER SESSION!
DO YOU ONLY OFFER 3-DAY SESSIONS? ARE THERE ANY SHORTER SESSIONS AVAILABLE?
Currently we only have 3-day workshops available — a lot goes into making a game, even a small one! 3 days gives kids enough time to brainstorm, design and develop something totally unique that they can be proud of, all while picking up invaluable new skills.
MY CHILD HAS SPECIAL NEEDS. HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT THEY WILL BE CARED FOR?
We are committed to making sure all our students feel safe and supported. You can disclose any additional supports your child needs in our enrolment form, or you can
email us at [email protected]. Any information you can give us is most welcome, and allows us to give your child the resources they need to thrive.
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?
We understand that life can get in the way sometimes. In the event that you need to cancel your child's enrolment to an upcoming workshop, the following procedures apply:
More than 7 days notice —
we will issue a full refund of any course fees paid.
Less than 7 days notice —
